Call me old fashioned, but there is something I love about making heart shaped desserts for my loved ones on Valentine’s Day. A homemade cake is leaps and bounds better than a boxed mix, and I will show you how with a simple recipe, you can create a sinful dessert to share!

Step 1. Find a recipe you love. Chocolate or Vanilla, Red Velvet or Spice, it doesn’t matter, just find a recipe that tastes great and that you think you can master. I finally have my winning chocolate cake recipe courtesy of Food.com.

Step 2. Gather Ingredients. I like to lay everything out to make sure I have every ingredient I will need for my recipe. Nothing is worse than sneaking into my neighbor’s house for some eggs when I realized my husband decided to make omelets the day before.

Step 3. Mix up your batter. Follow your recipe and mix your cake batter. I like to preheat the oven while I complete this step.

Step 4. Prep your pans. Parchment paper is a lifesaver. Line your cake pans (an 8 inch square pan and an 8 inch round pan to make the heart shaped cake) with parchment paper, spray with nonstick cooking spray, and coat lightly with flour to keep the batter from sticking to the pan.

Step 5. Cool and Slice. Cool the cakes completely, gently removing them from the pan. Slice the round cake in half and place on 2 sides of the square cake to form a heart. For easy clean up, place on your favorite serving platter and line with pieces of parchment paper to prevent a mess while frosting.

Step 6. Frost, Decorate and Enjoy! I love cream cheese icing with chocolate cake. Here is my go to recipe.) I added some food coloring to give my frosting the festive pink hue. Frost evenly, but don’t worry about perfection, it’s a cake, you are going to eat it, it’s the thought that counts…right? Decorate with your favorite sprinkles and other edible adornments, and enjoy with a cold glass of milk!

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!
